Memoir Writing Workshop – Online – June 2-July 11, 2014

This six-week class will focus on key elements of a strong memoir – focus, detail, description, and honesty.  We will work on specific assignments that help you hone the particular story you want to tell, and we will read excerpts from some of the best memoirs available including Mary Karr, Joan Didion, James Baldwin, Vladimir Nabokov, and others. (For my definition of memoir, read my post “I Love An Honest Memoir.“)

Because the expectation is that many people enrolled in this course will be working on their own memoirs, writing assignments will be guided but open so that students can focus on their own projects while still producing pieces that can be workshopped by the class.

Each class week will go something as follows:

  • Friday – receive assignments for next week.
  • Tuesday – begin discussion of reading assignments in private Facebook group.
  • Saturday – Submit piece for workshop OR complete workshop on classmates’ pieces in Dropbox/Google Drive.
  • Each day – participate in conversations about craft and reading assignments in Facebook, as time permits.

Each student will be asked to read approximately 10 pages of work and write 3-5 pages of work every other week.

Cost – $250 – Includes all reading and writing assignments.

Sign up for this course via Paypal by paying $250 via the button below. Paypal will send you a receipt, which confirms your place in the class.
