Creative Nonfiction Essay Writing – Online Class – June 2-July 11, 2014

This six-week course will focus on the various essay forms available to creative nonfiction writers. We will work in a variety of genres including memoir and lyric essays as well as read from the prominent historical and contemporary authors in this genre. We will discuss key elements of essays – like the use of scene and dialogue and how structure affects our ideas – and study some strong models in the genre including JoAnn Beard, Montaigne, Sedaris, Baldwin, Brenda Miller, and more.

As I get to know the writing interests of students, I will tailor both reading and writing assignments to the specific goals of students while also pushing everyone enrolled to read new writers and try new things.

Each class week will go something as follows:

  • Friday – receive assignments for next week
  • Tuesday – begin discussion of reading assignments in private Facebook group
  • Saturday – Submit piece for workshop OR complete workshop on classmates’ pieces in Dropbox
  • Each day – participate in conversations about craft and reading assignments in Facebook, as time permits.

Each student will be asked to read approximately 10 pages of work and write 3-5 pages of work every other week.

Cost – $250 – Includes all reading and writing assignments.
