I’ve come, once again, to a place in life and writing where I’m tapped out. I am drained; the well has run draw; I’m running on empty – and all those other liquid-related cliches that say I am tired. Some stuff in my personal life is very hard right now, and work, as always, takes most of my energy. So writing – that’s been slow and tedious – drip by drip, if you will – lately. But I’m still here, before 7am, writing, reading, thinking. I’m keeping up the practice even if the writing is coming slowly. That has to be enough for now.

But I have made a vow that once this major committee is done for me – on an unintentionally symbolic date, Halloween – I will slow down as much as I possibly can. More time at home to read and listen to music. More time to talk walks and think. And more time to write. Just saying that makes me feel better.

When I get tired, one of the best things I can do for myself is to listen to really good music. One of my favorite singer/songwriters is Patty Griffin. I always say that when I get to Heaven, I will sing like this woman. Two of my favorite songs by her right now are “When It Don’t Come Easy” and “Up to the Mountain” (the MLK Song). Here are the lyrics:

When It Don’t Come Easy by Patty Griffin

Red lights are flashing on the highway
I wonder if we’re gonna ever get home
I wonder if we’re gonna ever get home tonight
Everywhere the waters getting rough
Your best intentions may not be enough
I wonder if we’re gonna ever get home tonight

But if you break down
I’ll drive out and find you
If you forget my love
I’ll try to remind you
And stay by you when it don’t come easy

I don’t know nothing except change will come
Year after year what we do is undone
Time keeps moving from a crawl to a run
I wonder if we’re gonna ever get home

You’re out there walking down a highway
And all of the signs got blown away
Sometimes you wonder if you’re walking in the wrong direction

But if you break down
I’ll drive out and find you
If you forget my love
I’ll try to remind you
And stay by you when it don’t come easy

So many things that I had before
That don’t matter to me now
Tonight I cry for the love that I’ve lost
And the love I’ve never found
When the last bird falls
And the last siren sounds
Someone will say what’s been said before
Some love we were looking for

But if you break down
I’ll drive out and find you
If you forget my love
I’ll try to remind you
And stay by you when it don’t come easy

Up To The Mountain (MLK Song) by Patty Griffin

I went up to the mountain
Because you asked me to
Up over the clouds
To where the sky was blue
I could see all around me
Everywhere
I could see all around me
Everywhere

Sometimes I feel like
I’ve never been nothing but tired
And I’ll be walking
Till the day I expire
Sometimes I lay down
No more can I do
But then I go on again
Because you ask me to

Some days I look down
Afraid I will fall
And though the sun shines
I see nothing at all
Then I hear your sweet voice, oh
Oh, come and then go, come and then go
Telling me softly
You love me so

The peaceful valley
Just over the mountain
The peaceful valley
Few come to know
I may never get there
Ever in this lifetime
But sooner or later
It’s there I will go
Sooner or later
It’s there I will go

Such powerful lyrics. Let me know what you think.
