Stainless Steel Droppings is running a Once Upon a Time Reading Challenge where people read a series of fantasy-related books between March 21st and June 20th. I’ve signed up, and here’s what I’ll be reading:
Fantasy (I think) — Stardust by Neil Gaiman and Wicked by Gregory McGuire
Fairy Tales — The Complete Grimm’s Fairy Tales, Burning Your Boats by Angela Carter, and The Happy Prince and Other Fairy Tales by Oscar Wilde
Mythology — Weight by Jeanette Winterson and Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood
Folklore — Mountain Mysteries by Larry D. Thacker, and perhaps one other folklore book (suggestions welcome).
Finally, I’ll be capping the challenge with Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare.
This is a lot of reading for me with all the other work I do, but I love this stuff. I’m hoping that by signing up to do a challenge, I’ll actually trick my hyper-responsible self to actually do something I enjoy just because I said I would. Wish me luck.
So Many Books talks about McSweeney’s Joke Book of Book Jokes. Some funny stuff there, especially if you’re a writing teacher trying to come up with prompts for your creative writing class.
